Litlbird (available as an Android app and at https://litlbird.co.uk) uses your device's location in order to let you know which places you are near to. That information is not sent to the server.
Additionally the app uses the device location to determine whether the user is close enough to a place for the app to enable the update feature. Simply enabling the feature sends no information to the server.
The update feature is enabled when a device is close enough to a listed place. The feature allows the user to send information to the server if they choose to do so, by clicking the buttons in the Traffic section.
The location is not sent to the server or stored but it is possible to infer the approximate location of a device at the time of an update by cross referencing with the shop or public space it relates to.
The Litlbird app sends the user's update and device's unique ID (UUID) to the remote database. If Litlbird is being used via a web browser, rather than the app, the user's IP address is sent instead of the device UUID. The UUID is stored on the database in order to check against future updates and prevent multiple duplicate updates from the same user within an hour.
The Litlbird app sends the user's update and user's username to the remote database. The user's location can be inferred from the update. The username is stored on the database in order to check against future updates and prevent multiple duplicate updates from the same user within an hour. The data is also used to create a leaderboard of users.
